Instructions

Basic Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Sauté the finely chopped onions over medium heat until translucent, about 4-5 minutes, then add the minced garlic and sauté until golden brown and fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, mash the rinsed black beans until mostly smooth yet somewhat chunky for texture.
  • Gently fold in the sautéed onion and garlic, along with the breadcrumbs, cumin, paprika, cilantro, and the egg (or flax egg).
  • Shape the mixture into patties about half an inch thick and place them onto the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the patties are firm and slightly crispy on the outside.
  • Toast the whole wheat buns until golden either in a skillet or the oven.
  • Assemble the burgers on the buns, adding toppings like avocado or salsa if desired.

Notes

Leftover burgers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven at 350°F until warm.
